BERNE, SWITZERLAND: Pakistan has been ranked at the 48th spot in Education First’s (EF) English Proficiency Index (EPI) – the world’s largest ranking of countries according to their English proficiency levels.
The factors influencing the ranking system include low percentage of people with internet access and the level of spending on education. Netherland tops the list, followed by Denmark and Sweden – who scored the second and third place, respectively – with Iraq securing the place on the list.
The EF ranked 72 countries on their English proficiency based via an online test and it conducts the study every year to see which non-native countries rank the highest in English.
The study has two parts: the first evaluates the relationship between English and its relationship to various socio-economic factors. The second looks at the proficiency across four continents – Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
Unfortunately, the study’s methodology is somewhat limited in that it uses multiple choice questions to test reading and listening skills rather than looking at spoken fluency or written ability – which is often considered more important.
